Description
Made of a high temperature fired ceramic, meaning stoneware. 7.25 inches high, 3.5 inches wide at the mouth, very heavy. No breaks or chips or repairs anywhere, however the generic pewter flip-top lid is missing (there is a small hole in the top of the handle which is where the lid was attached). The statement "Don't trust a fox in a green meadow or the word of a Jew" is on this stein; you might be interested to know that "Don't trust a fox...word of a Jew", is also the title of a rare anti-semitic childrens book published in Germany during the Third Reich. This stein dates to the 1920's from Nurnberg, Germany. The photos I took outside did not come out as well as I hoped, the one I placed flat on the scanner shows the great condition the paint is in, as you can see by its strong blue color. Shown in the last photos is this very stein with its lid that appeared at auction with an estimate of $3,000 - $5,000, which does not include the 22% buyers premium. Also shown is from an exhibiton held at the Jewish Museum of Hohenems, Austria in 2006, which was of a vast collection of Anti-Semitica produced in Germany. This very stein is shown (the catalog states it is from the 1920's), also with its lid missing. I've handled quite a few antique beer steins over the years, and not once have I found one without the lid. Perhaps the manufacturing process for this particular stein was not as good as it should have been, and the lids came off easily?Fascinating piece of history, just a few short years later in 1935, the "Nurnberger Gesetze" against Jews were passed (better known as the "Nuremberg Laws", the correct German pronunciation is "Nurnberg" however, not "Nuremberg"). No coincidence this stein came from Nurnberg as well...Priority mail shipping with delivery confirmation is $13 to anywhere in the USA (insurance is extra and up to the buyer). I don't have 100% positive feedback for nothin!
