Description
Lathe 18th Century Treadle Lathe This is a complete functioning 18th Century foot powered treadle lathe. It was hand made about 20 years ago by a blacksmith in Roanoak VA based on an 18th century design. I have used it for these many years for show and demonstration of 18th Century Windsor Chair Making and for some light production work. All iron and steel parts are hand forged using the original design, all wood parts are hand made from Hickory and Oak. The lathe is principally used for chair spindle work turning green wood. The bed is 38 inches maximum with a working length of 30" with a throw of 6 inches (12" dia). The bed rails are 2" x 5-1/2"" Hickory. Work is turned using the food pedal on the eccentric drive of the 22" diameter by 3-1/2" oak flywheel which in turn drives the turning with the 2" leather drive belt. The head stock is a solid steel shaft riding on steel guide pieces - there are no bearings. The shaft needs to be kept oiled when in use. The dead end is a solid steel shaft in the wood tail piece which is fixed to the bed rails with a wedge. The shaft is anchored from turning with a wood wedge. The tool rest moves along the bed rails with a wood hand screw lock. The 2" leather drive belt is slack and needs to be tightened and there is some light rust on some of the iron parts as I have not used the lathe for several years. The lathe does disassemble into a pile of pieces for transportation if necessary, but it is very heavy - approximately 150 lbs. This lathe is in perfect working condition and excellent for display and demonstration of 18th Century craft. It requires quite a bit of practice and endurance to produce a finished turning but it is a fascinating process. All turners should work with a tool like this to appreciate early craftsman. The lathe dimensions are: Overall width - 58" Overall height - 51" Overall depth (stabilizing feet) - 30" Bed height - 41" Turning height - 47" SHIPPING:  Unit can be picked up in Northeast Tennessee.  Buyer is responsible for all shipping costs and arrangements.  For shipping, Lathe will need to be disassembled and crated for shipment by truck freight. Crate would be approximately 65"x 60"x 16" and weigh approximately 300 pounds. Contact me for information about shipping or pickup before you bid.
